The Dakotas: Zero Hurricanes

Last week NRO reported the number of hurricanes hitting each state in the past 104 years: Direct Hits, 1900-2004 Florida 64 Texas 38 North Carolina 29 Louisiana 27 South Carolina 16 Alabama 12 Mississippi 9 New York 9 Connecticut 8...
Voter Fraud

From a Wall Street Journal editorial on 9/22/2005 about the new Carter/Baker voting reform commission's suggested reforms: The voter-ID recommendations are particularly noteworthy, however, because for decades the left has maintained that voter fraud isn't a problem. In fact, it's...
More hate from the left

From NewsMax: Yesterday's anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., is being hailed as the biggest since the halcyon protest days of the Vietnam war - a claim that seems to surface every time the anti-war left gets together en-masse. Leaving the...
Federalization of Disasters

And those caissons go rolling along

The Chief posted a comment yesterday, with a negative response to Bush's proposal to federalize the responsibility for rapid if not first response in case of disasters.

It seems that my concerns about the further erosion of states' soveriegnty have been noticed elsewhere. This DC Times OpEd by Tony Blankley goes further in exploring this issue. Check it out.

Cutting Remarks from the Clean Cut Kid

I seem to have offended Chad at the CCK by my recent post. Chad and I have been reasonably cordial to one another, which explains his comment, addressed to me, that I was the sane one [here at SDP]. Fortunately...
MSM Gets Another Black Eye

Media, blushing, takes a second look at Katrina

First was the priceless moment when General Honore told the assembled press "You're stuck on stupid!".

Later on, inaccuracy, sensationalism, and in effect rumor-mongering has been noted to be endemic in the coverage of the gulf coast hurricanes.

Several media organizations have examined, sometimes harshly, the work of newspapers and particularly cable-TV news networks. The New Orleans Times-Picayune published a lengthy account Monday of errors, misrepresentations and wildly exaggerated claims of murder, rape and abuse of children at the New Orleans Superdome. The newspaper cited publication of "scores of myths about the dome and Convention Center treated as fact by evacuees, the media and even some of New Orleans' top officials."

Meanwhile, what's that bit again about the alternative media such as the blogosphere not having responsible editorial and organizational control to insure factual reportage? Like the cases with the NYT reporters fabricating stories, and the TV networks doing the same, when not reporting forged information as fact, apparently they regard themselves as having transcended the standards they would impose on others.

A slight issue with hypocrisy here? Shocking behavior by elements of the (self)esteemed 4th estate!

I bought my Acer Aspire 1690 notebook about three months ago, so I thought I'd share with you a quick impression of how the experience has been. The Good: The brilliant widescreen display still blows me away, and I now...
Hildebrand Group Could Be Fading

As SDP has reported before, Daschle's former/current campaign manager and several former/current Daschle staffers are being paid by Americans United, which has been big in their permanent campaign against Senator Thune. According to today's Roll Call, they could be closing...
