NASA to Unveil Plans to Send 4 Astronauts to Moon in 2018

NASA briefed senior White House officials Wednesday on its plan to spend $100 billion and the next 12 years building the spacecraft and rockets it needs to put humans back on the Moon by 2018. The U.S. space agency now expects to roll out its lunar exploration plan to key Congressional committees on Friday and to the broader public through a news conference on Monday.

Phew! It's about time. The only concern the Chief has about this is why take so long to get back there, when we did it for the first time in less than a decade - well, I guess it is NASA, after all.

Bush signs BRAC plan

WIth Presidential approval of the BRAC report, it's all over but the shouting & Ellsworth survived the process.

President Bush on Thursday endorsed a plan for closing 22 major military bases and reconfiguring 33 others, leaving their fate to Congress.
Bush had until Sept. 23 to either accept the entire report from an independent commission and send it to Congress, or return it to the commission for further work. The report will become final in 45 days unless Congress acts to reject it in full. In previous rounds, lawmakers never have rejected reports, meaning communities probably have little hope of a reprieve for their bases.

Likewise, bases left off the BRAC closure list, have little to fear at this point. Aside from the economics of the situation, the Chief believes that the strategic and military factors were the only ones that should have been significant in the final decisions. In the cases of Ellsworth, and the Naval bases in Maine and Connecticut at least, the Chief had NO doubt that this was the case, as did the commissioners, resulting in the positive outcome for South Dakota.

Universities urged to root out extremism

Universities must root out extremism on campus as part of the war on terror, Ruth Kelly, Education Secretary will say in a speech.

Here's a radical new idea from across the pond: universities to actively monitor and crack down on extreme radicalism in order to help in the terror war.

Ms Kelly is expected to tell the organisation's annual conference: "Higher education institutions need to identify and confront unacceptable behaviour on their premises and within their community. "They should be alert and be unafraid to set their own boundaries - within the law and with the law in support - in consultation with their own community and the wider community. "That means informing the police where criminal offences are being perpetrated or where there may be concerns about possible criminal acts.

What a concept. Sound to me like she gets it.
