9/11 Anniversary Not Marked At Casa McClaren

It's the fourth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Other, better bloggers are marking the occasion, so you don't need me to do it for you. And do you want to know something? I'm letting the whole commemoration pass. Frankly,...
More On Umpires

I wish to add to the discussion of the umpire/judge analogy. Of course the analogy is imperfect, but it is effective as far as it goes. I would simply add this. If there was an umpire who said, Some are...

Hey, Maybe the Singularity Really Is Near

A very interesting article from Glenn Reynolds stepping outside of his "evil" incarnation as the Instapundit, in which he points out some very strange sounding science and technology at the bleeding edge of the art.

Ray Kurzweil's book, The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology comes out next week. And I suspect that a lot of people wonder if things will really happen as fast as Kurzweil suggests.
But as I look at the news reports, I see quite a few signs that we're living in a future that not long ago would have looked science fictional. Take, for example, this report: Miracle Mouse Can Grow Back Limbs.

Kurzweil is an optimist, but even he worries that the Singularity may come as a result of Chinese, not American, efforts, and he's got some disturbing numbers. The future is almost here, but we've still got some choices about how things will turn out. Let's try to choose wisely.

The Strange Saga of Finnis D. Shelnutt

Jesus, now this has to be seen to be believed: Finnis Shelnutt, real estate developer, stock broker, bar owner, former brother-in-law of Webb Hubbell and Gennifer Flowers' current husband. Now he's livin' in N.O. and crazy talkin'. [Found it at...

Ok, Now I'm worried

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has endorsed the confirmation of John Roberts to replace William Rehnquist. This week's Senate Judiciary Committee hearings have been fascinating on several fronts, not the least for their jab-and-parry-exchanges between senators and Supreme Court nominee John Roberts....
