The War on Terror

9/12/05 Mitchell Daily Republic:America is succeeding in the fight against terrorism, and South Dakotans have played a strong role in that fight, said U.S. Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., while speaking during Sunday?s Sept. 11 Memorial Service in Mitchell. The memorial...
Blame Federalism

Kaus has it about right: Sure, the Bushies are using the federalism issue, and Louisiana's potentially bruised feelings, as an excuse--especially when they talk about how "it would have been perceived" if Bush had seized control of the relief effort...
UK U's Urged to Rat Out Radicals

Universities urged to root out extremism

Universities must root out extremism on campus as part of the war on terror, Ruth Kelly, Education Secretary will say in a speech.

Here's a radical new idea from across the pond: universities to actively monitor and crack down on extreme radicalism in order to help in the terror war.

Ms Kelly is expected to tell the organisation's annual conference: "Higher education institutions need to identify and confront unacceptable behaviour on their premises and within their community. "They should be alert and be unafraid to set their own boundaries - within the law and with the law in support - in consultation with their own community and the wider community. "That means informing the police where criminal offences are being perpetrated or where there may be concerns about possible criminal acts.

What a concept. Sound to me like she gets it.

In Katrina's Wake

David Brooks and Ruben Navarrette have different takes on the government's response on all levels to hurricane Katrina. Not surprisingly I find myself siding with Brooks. Brooks argues: Katrina was the most anticipated natural disaster in American history, and still...
Bread and Circuses

Ann Althouse has a funny and informative review of yesterday's Roberts hearings. Hat tip to Instapundit. Like him, I think this line is the funniest and pretty much sums up the left's jurisprudence: Or is one of Congress's enumerated powers...
Roberts v. Schumer

This is priceless. From yesterday's Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing.SCHUMER: Let me just say, sir, in all due respect -- and I respect your intelligence and your career and your family -- this process is getting a little more absurd the...
Only In Denver, and Only On Fark

Today's FARK headline: Today's "I'll never drink again" story brought to you by Denver, where man on painkillers, who hadn't slept for two days because of tooth abscess, decides to have a few beers and go four-wheeling at night in...
"Many liberal voters in South Dakota are now considering a boycott of Herseth"

Letter in today's Argus Leader:Herseth voting record Published: 09/12/05 It's annoying to see letters promoting Rep. Stephanie Herseth's work in Congress. What's interesting about her sales angle is the notion that Herseth works well with Republicans. Many liberal voters have...
