DARPA's 'Star Wars'-style Laser Cannon

Laser cannon. The words evoke immediate visions of the space war scenes in Star Wars. As it turns out the US is starting to build this new way to do it to them before they get a chance to do it to us. The Darpa program is called the High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS).

No muss, no fuss. Direct application of lethal energy to the target with no need for ammunition. Nice.

If you have an interest in other sorts of advanced projects, the DARPA TTO site (use the PROGRAMS link) describes some of the sorts of things that are coming down the chute. SciFi comes to life - our tax dollars at work, and worth every cent!

CINCPAC: ChiCom Naval Buildup Raises Questions

Why does China need that navy?

The new commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Adm. Gary Roughhead, an interested onlooker of the joint Chinese-Russian military maneuvers during the past eight days, has posed a critical question about the rapidly modernizing Chinese navy: "What do [the Chinese] see as the intended use of that navy?
If that navy "is to ensure the free flow of commerce, that would not be surprising," he said, nodding toward the sea lanes in the South China and East China seas through which pass the oil and raw materials that feed China's expanding economy, not to mention its soaring exports. The admiral added, however: "What if the intent is not purely to defend the sea lanes?" He left the question open.

Indeed. That IS the question.

Politicizing Tragedy

The left sinks to new depths. The reaction of the left on the hurricane on the Gulf coast is to bash George Bush. Chad Schuldt does it twice, here and here. The first link compares Bush to Nero, which reveals...
