What Did Al Franken Know, and When Did He Know It?

Don't you think that the MSM would be slightly more interested in the Air America scandal -- where the lib radio network evidently "diverted" funds earmarked for children and the elderly to itself -- if it involved a conservative network?...
Pro-life Flip Flops

No, I have not become monomaniacal on pro-life issues; they just happens to be in the news alot. When they cease being in the news, I'll cease talking about them. Here's a piece on Dick Durbin's conversion from pro-lifer to...

Is Herseth In Trouble?

I tend to think not, but am ready to be proven wrong. There some rumblings here and here. Certainly the earlier you get to an incumbent the better, so if Republicans are interested in taking back that seat, I suggest...
The negative side of ethanol

Now that John Thune is getting it done with ethanol, the Argus Leader can start running negative reports. Here is an excerpt from yesterday?s paper:South Dakota?s growing ethanol industry got a major boost Friday with passage of a $12.3 billion...
Wal-Mart: Good Economic Sense

A couple business administration nerds defend Wal-Mart on economic grounds in the NYT. Wal-Mart is especially good for the poor. Money quotes: With two-thirds of Wal-Mart stores in rural areas, this means that Wal-Mart saves its consumers something like $16...
South Dakotans Try to Influence Ohio

There is a special election in Ohio tomorrow to fill the seat of Republican Rob Portman who has become US Trade Representative. By my count four of the left-wing blogs in South Dakota are silent because they are in Ohio...
ChiComs Give Up on Oil Deal

Backlash ends Chinese bid for Unocal

China's CNOOC Ltd. on Tuesday abandoned a bold $18.5 billion offer to acquire Unocal Corp. (UCL) in the face of strident political opposition

This generated enough of an uproar, that the ChiComs' CNOOC gave up on trying to snarf up UNOCAL in an $18B+ deal. IT seems that lots of folks here felt pretty queasy about this one, and that concern managed to penetrate into Congress and elsewhere in D.C. Finally the ChiComs decided that it was more trouble than it was worth.

The Chief has a hunch that there's a bit more to it than that - perhaps the backdown was to keep us from getting too riled up at them before they're ready for their moves on Taiwan. In other words, they want to keep the sleeping giant asleep. Hopefully it doesn't work out for them that way.
